Since
its inception in 1998, SpringStar has provided effective,
nontoxic and environmentally safe pest control products. Springstar has
developed the most complete line of these products for home and garden.
And, in response to consumers' need for simple, useful pest products
that contain no poisons, SpringStar is adding more products every year.
SpringStar ships nationally and internationally to mass, chain and
independent hardware, garden and grocery outlets.
SpringStar
is one of the very few companies worldwide that is a primary
manufacturer and developer of insect pheromone technologies for
residential and garden pest control. It focuses solely on products that
use nontoxic mechanisms to effectively control pests. The Company is
systematically developing new, innovative traps and other pest control
products that cannot be found anywhere else. In its short history, the
Company has released more than 30 products and captured an 80+% market
share in mail-order catalogs. It is now growing rapidly in the retail
market channels.

In
February of 2002 SpringStar acquired the Oak Stump Farms
Yellowjacket and Fly traps. Since that acquisition, SpringStar has
overhauled the product line, its appearance and presentation, while
maintaining the effectiveness that made the product so successful.
"OakStump Farms" is now SpringStar's brand name for all of its outdoor
pest control products, which currently includes more than 20 different
items. These are sturdy, top-rated products built specifically for
outdoor use. |

SpringStar's
12+ indoor items fill the gap that will be left by the impending
cancellation of many traditional household pesticides. The EPA's risk
assessment for the pesticides diazinon and dursban has lead to
impending cancellation of all indoor, residential uses of these
toxicants. SpringStar has selected BioCare as the
brand name for its indoor household pest products. These products are
"biologically-based" and "caring" for the environment. |
After
introducing and test marketing a variety of
product and package designs, SpringStar is taking assertive steps to
build its key brand names. In April of 2002 SpringStar hired Kimball
Design, a nationally recognized design firm, to create a unique visual
appearance for national brand recognition. Kimball has redesigned the
graphic appearance for all the products and is enhancing the shelf
appearance, displays, customer appeal and product acceptance. All
SpringStar products for 2003 sales will benefit from the "new and
improved" look created exclusively for SpringStar by Kimball Design.
Each target insect has been hand-painted in detailed, lifelike poses by
wildlife artist Ian Sheldon. Most buyers that have evaluated the new
artwork have placed products for the upcoming season.
SpringStar was founded by Michael Banfield, who has spent
the greater part of his working life developing pest products based on
insect pheromone and biotechnology techniques. Mr. Banfield has been
interested in nature and concerned about avoiding pollution and
preserving the environment. While other organizations tried to stop,
ban or outlaw legal pesticides, Mr. Banfield became interested in
developing alternative products to give customers useful choices that
did not rely on poisons. That way, people could stop using toxic
materials and still effectively control their pest problems. To achieve
his goals, Mr. Banfield supplemented his degree in Biology with a
Master's degree in Pest Management from the Center for Pest Management
at Simon Fraser University in Canada. He then
operated a group of companies providing traditional pest and weed
control services for home, industry and landscape. He also co-founded
Phero-Tech, a Canadian company using insect pheromones for forest pest
control. To complete is education, he obtained an Executive MBA.
Mike saw an opportunity to develop a complete line of products for
agriculture and residential use by joining Consep Inc. as their lead
scientist in 1985. He proceeded to develop a number of pheromone-based
pest products for agriculture and home-garden use. Some of the lures
and traps that he commercialized became part of the "Sure-Fire" line
that was eventually acquired by Woodstream. He left Consep in 1991 just
before its public offering in order to continue his quest for better
nontoxic pest solutions. He then founded Agro-BioTech Corp. to develop
fungicides from naturally-based bacteria and to manufacture insect
traps under private label and national brand names. SpringStar's
initial product line arose from key ABT products that were enhanced,
redesigned and improved.
SpringStar remains a privately-held family business with a philosophy
of working hard but enjoying life, family and friends. It operates its
administrative and research offices from a wooded 8 acre farm on the
outskirts of Seattle. The company is geared to grow at a rapid pace
while maintaining high product quality standards and on-time
fulfillment.
